What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. When you come back, the browser hands that file back, so the site can recognise the visit. Cookies cannot read files on your device, run programs or carry viruses. They are labels, not keys.
This policy explains the cookies used on yardtactic.com and how to control them. It sits alongside our privacy policy, which covers personal information more broadly.

The cookies this site uses
| Type | Set by | What it does | Typical lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Yard Tactic | Core site function, security, load balancing and, where comments are enabled, keeping your session valid while you post | Session to 12 months |
| Preferences | Yard Tactic | Remembers small choices, such as a comment name and email so you do not retype them | Up to 12 months |
| Analytics | Google Analytics | Counts visits, measures which guides are read and how pages perform. Aggregated and anonymised, never used to identify you by name | Up to 24 months |
| Affiliate tracking | Amazon and other retailers | Records that you arrived at a retailer from a Yard Tactic link, so a commission can be attributed if you buy | Set by the retailer, commonly 24 hours to 30 days |
| Security and bot filtering | Content delivery network | Distinguishes real visitors from automated traffic and protects the site from attacks | Session to 12 months |
03
First party and third party
First party cookies are set by yardtactic.com itself. Third party cookies are set by another company whose service runs on the page, such as an analytics provider or a retailer you click through to. We do not control third party cookies, and each provider handles them under its own privacy policy.
Affiliate cookies are worth understanding specifically. When you click an affiliate link, the retailer sets a cookie on its own domain that records where you came from. If you buy within that cookie’s lifetime, we are credited with a commission at no extra cost to you. We never see your payment details, your delivery address or the items in your basket. Full detail is on our affiliate disclosure page.

How to manage or delete cookies
Every major browser lets you see stored cookies, delete them, block them by category, or block them entirely. The controls sit in the settings menu, usually under a heading such as privacy, security, or site permissions.
- Chrome. Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third party cookies and Site data.
- Safari. Settings, then Privacy, where you can block cross site tracking and manage stored website data.
- Firefox. Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Cookies and Site Data and the Enhanced Tracking Protection options.
- Edge. Settings, then Cookies and site permissions, then Manage and delete cookies and site data.
Menu names change between versions, so search your browser’s help for the word cookies if the path above does not match what you see. You can also browse in a private or incognito window, which discards cookies when you close it.
What blocking cookies changes
Blocking analytics or affiliate cookies does not restrict your access to anything on this site. Every guide, chart and table stays fully readable. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may break parts of the site, such as posting a comment. Blocking affiliate cookies means we earn nothing if you buy, which is your choice to make and costs you nothing either way.

Do Not Track, and changes to this policy
Some browsers send a Do Not Track signal. There is still no agreed industry standard for responding to it, so this site does not currently respond to Do Not Track signals. The browser controls described above give you direct and reliable control instead.
We may update this policy as the services we use change. When we do, the last updated date at the top of this page changes with it. Questions go to hello@yardtactic.com.
